About the podcast

Picture
A LITTLE HELP FOR OUR FRIENDS is a podcast for people with friends and loved ones struggling with mental health. Often we think of mental health as an individual problem--as though it only affects the person with a given diagnosis. Instead, we believe that mental health affects a system of people: spouses, families, friend groups, and coworkers can be deeply affected by the mental health struggles of one individual. We also know how frustrating, exhausting, or hopeless it can feel to want to help but not know how to. A Little Help Podcast sheds light on what your loved ones could be struggling with and provides scientifically-informed perspectives on various mental health topics. As two Duke University clinical psychology Ph.D. students, we are learning along with you and share insights from our training on the relational nature of mental health. We mix evidence-based learning with our own personal examples and stories from our listeners.

If you would like us to discuss a dilemma you or your loved one is facing, please DM Jacqueline on Instagram @trumbullina or shoot us an email in the Contact Us section of this website. Keep in mind that what you share will be discussed publicly on the podcast for informational purposes only, not for clinical or medical advice (see disclaimer below).

Jacqueline Trumbull

Picture

Host

Jacqueline is a Ph.D student in clinical psychology at Duke University and has a BA in philosophy from the University of Virginia. Her primary research interests are in borderline personality disorder, narcissism, and misophonia. She is particularly interested in how interpersonal functioning is impacted by personality pathology, as well as the social emotions like shame, envy, and contempt. She enjoys agonizing over two paragraphs in a Word doc and calling it fiction writing, painting elephants, tormenting her cat, and gazing at her vegetable garden. She's enormously unathletic but still performed as a wrestler in a prom dress on Season 22 of The Bachelor.

Kibby McMahon is completing her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Duke University and has a BA in psychology from Columbia University. She is currently an intern at Weil Cornell/NY Presbyterian Hospital. Her research and clinical work focuses on helping people connect more deeply to themselves and others. She enjoys teaching yoga, running a fitness studio in the pandemic (www.intentfithouse.com), wondering how she can work harder, taking on on too many responsibilities while worrying about how she needs to work harder, and snuggling with her puppies. She says her career is her primary focus in life, but deep down she knows her relationships are more important than anything else. She also likes playing Zelda on Nintendo Switch.
